The development of curriculum at an independent school is a dynamic, thoughtful process. Because of the emphasis on academic and moral rigor central to the mission of the Pingry School, the faculty and administrators strive to balance the sound practices of the school's traditional past with the findings of brain researchers and learning specialists, available technological tools and advances, and the evolution of best practices for modern learners to maintain excellence.

I have provided links to some thought-provoking articles which shed light on our ongoing curricular work in the Lower School.

Integration of Character Education and the Curriculum-Short Hills Campus

On the Short Hills campus we follow a monthly calendar schedule which highlights different character attributes. Keywords are displayed prominently all through the building. These monthly attributes (Loyalty, Honesty, Justice, Courage, Hope, Respect, Love) function as organizing themes throughout the school for literature discussions, writing topics, historical viewpoints, musical choices, behavioral emphases in physical education classes, homeroom projects (skits, read-alouds, art projects) and discussions of the Honor Code and ethical dilemmas in homeroom and Decisions classes with the fifth and sixth grades. The librarian makes books and videos available to students and teachers in conjunction with the themes.  Teachers have touched upon these principles through the inclusion of essential questions in their curricula which are investigative in a moral sense.
