     Firstglance Protein Viewer

DIRECTIONS:

You are responsible for creating a small presentation on a specific proteins.

Using the Protein Data Bank and finding the Molecule of the Month feature you need to choose a protein from the "alphabetical listing" .

Read through the list of proteins and find a protein that is an ENZYME! Be sure that you have an enzyme.

Then read the entire Molecule of the Month feature about your enzyme and find out what your protein does.

Be careful! Some of the proteins listed here are NOT enzymes but are structural proteins.

You will not receive credit unless you have chosen an enzyme. An enzyme is a type of protein that is often needed to carry out a chemical reaction.

For example, insulin is not an enzyme but is actually a hormone.

In a well developed paragraph,(1) describe the role of your enzyme and what (2) metabolic role your enzyme plays- for example what is the substrate that your enzyme works on.

Include two pictures of your protein in different views.

I suggest Firstglance (an online protein viewer) and make a screen shot of your rendering and paste it into a word document or ppt slide.

Style counts here. Make clear renderings of your protein and crop the image very well.

Use the toogle commands from on the firstglance page to create different views of your protein.

You may NOT any picture from David Goodsell's work (molecule of the month). You will need to create your own but use his as inspiration.

To use Firstglance you will need to put in the PDB id number. The PDB number for your structure is referenced by Dr. Goodsell somewhere in the MOM Feature.

Simply type in the number and toogle the buttons on the left. Follow the instructions to manipulate your molecule.

Complete the project on a normal printer sized piece of paper.

Have the NAME of your protein as a title across the top of the page.

Be sure that your images occupy at least 65% of the visual space on the page.

The typed paragraph should be a supportive addition to your images.

Honor pledge on the back and please put your name on the front.

Be sure that the name of your protein is on the top of the page in large font to serve as a title of the project.
