GIRL'S CHORUS DESCRIPTION AND ASSESSMENT
The Pingry Girl's Chorus is comprised girls from the 7th and 8th grades (Forms I and II).
During the first weeks of school, the middle school girls have the opportunity to select from
chorus, band, or strings. Those who select chorus will have a class commitment during two CPs
for their week. This year, 7th grade girls will be rehearsing on Tuesday and Thursday CP and 8th
grade girls will meet on Monday and Wednesday CP. Please see the calendar on the homepage for
more schedule details.
The Pingry Girl's Chorus schedule of rehearsals and performances can be found on the Pingry
Website at: http://www.pingry.org/page.cfm?p=834
A contract will be sent out to parents of all students involved. The yearly schedule will be included
and we will require that any known conflicts with mandatory rehearsals or performances be
listed on a conflict sheet. This sheet will need to be returned to the music department by the
date listed on the contract. If we do not receive a contract back by the due date, it will be the
music department's assumption that there are no conflicts.
The goal of the Pingry School music department is to offer students in the middle school of all
music backgrounds and levels, from beginner to experienced, an opportunity to rehearse and
perform in a music ensemble. Performance in a music ensemble develops listening, communication,
attention, and interaction skills among many others. Students have an opportunity to develop
leadership skills, as their attention and focus in class can set a great example for other students.
The music performed in the ensemble will vary in style, musical genre, musical time period-
from classical to traditional to popular, and difficulty level. Music for soprano and alto parts
will often be available for rehearsal on the Pingry website. Students can go to:
Pingry.org>Arts>Multimedia Gallery>Click on arrow>Arts>Music>Middle School Music or
Upper School Music.
Students are encouraged to take their music home with them for practice, and they must bring the music back with them for class.
Students will be assessed in the following areas:
Attention
Focus
Positive interaction with others
Folder Maintenance
Attendance
Attitude
Prompt arrival to class
Creating a positive learning environment
Music Theory handouts
Attendance at mandatory rehearsals and concerts
Singing in small groups
Effort in class
I believe that all students start with an Exceptional Pass. If each student follows the above assessment
guidelines, they will receive the EP. If students talk, mistreat their folders and music, come late to class,
don't complete handouts, take attention away from the class, lose their focus, etc., the grade will be
lower. Below is the grading scale:
Exceptional Pass (avg. 95-100)
High Pass (avg. 90-94)
Pass (avg. 80-89)
Low Pass (avg. 70-79)
No Pass (avg. below 70)
Grades will be given at the end of each semester for all 7th and 8th grade students involved in Girl's Chorus.
