Beginning a Musical Instrument at Pingry:  The Fourth Grade Grade Instrumental Program

At the end of their third grade year, students attend a demonstration lesson of instruments available to them in the 4th grade (flute, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, violin, viola, and cello).  After consulting with their parents at home, students make decisions about which instrument to play.

At the beginning of the 4th grade year, students are placed in instrumental classes and are taught the rudiments of their new instrument.  As the year progresses, students develop skills and prepare for the band and strings program in the 5th  grade and beyond.

Note:  Students in grades other than grade four do not have the opportunity to be placed in a beginning instrumental class.  If older or younger students decide to begin an instrument study, we encourage them to obtain private lessons on their own.  We will consult with their instrumental teacher, and will enfold them into the program when they are ready.
