Some work on test today but Continuing Ghost in the Genes.

Test is preferably due tonight by midnight BUT that may not work for some kids. Please let me know if I should look for your test on Saturday.

Test due by midnight Firday or sturday if needed.

HW- Please be sure that you HAVE successfully logged into the link for Rutgers Waksman Student Scholars Program 2011-2012 program.

Click on the 2011-2012 research program

, then click the DNA sequence analyis program link, and register if you have NOT.

The following students have to take the pre-survey test...(blech)...don't stress about it! Just take a QUICK glance at the question and do the best you can. Please DON't worry abou the score.

Asexual vs Sexual reproduction

Do Humans do both types? y or N?

Do plants?

What is the benefit of being a sexually reproducing organism?

What is the benefit of being an organism that reproduces asexually?

Psat's

6th period: watch Movie- Ghost in the genes.

Student will work on the packet titled Mitosis & the Cell Cycle

The can work in small groups only.

For HW:  Students should complete the packet and review the ppt from course website on mitosis

Read: read from textbook 8.1-8.6

Be sure to be have the following terms defined in your notes. Try to include examples where necessary.

Asexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction

Binary Fission

Chromatin vs Chromosomes

What is the relationship between sister chromatid? What cellular process creates sister chromatids?

Mitosis

Cytokinesis

Prophase,metaphase,anaphase,telophase

Assignment for Classes:

Complete second packet: Root Development

Read the following sections 8.10- 8.11

And answer the following questions in your notes.

Compare cleavage furrow to cell plate

What are  the (3) influences on weather a cell will divide?

What is the cell cycle control system? What happens when it “breaks”?

What is cancer? What is the “good” type of cancer?

Be prepared for open notes (your notes) quiz on Monday.

Announcement:

I am switching to a new course management system! I am sooo tired of this thinkwave nightmare that I am going to something completely different!

HW:

I will give you a log in page in class today and you should go on and answer first question. This new version should have easy access to the both your grades and the assignments with some new ways to do some work!

Cruise around and let me know what you think.

Introduction to Duckweed!

What is interesting about Duckweed? How can we study these genes? How can you create a cDNA library? Why are we interested in having a cDNA library and  not a genomic library?

Videos

About Duckweed video

How to make a cDNA library

Bangladesh Wastewater Sytem

Would this system work in the US?

Vocab:

CDNA, reverse transcriptase, Introns, exons

HW: Please watch the video and WHILE watching ADD addtional notes to the diagram handed out in class.

More Duckweed....

Today: Discussed the Bangladesh video of waster water recycling

More on the diagram that covers how to make a c DNA library

HW: Figure out WHY that colony was blue!

Here is a big hint: link

Vocab: Genomic vs cDNA library,ORF, UTR, reading frame, codon, Reverse transcriptase, Transcription and translation

10/11

12

More CDNA library!

Blue white assay- reviewed the concept of why the colony was blue. Watch language. Use specific and precise terms.

Review the gels

Which gels was the Restriction digest gel?

Which was the PCR gel?

What should you see for each?

What are explanations for stranges bands or missing bands in the gels?

Picked Colonies from plates

Remember colonies will shake (to give oxgyen) at 37C for optimal growth.

As we begin this process you will need register with Dr. Vershon's program, The Waksman Student Scholar Program and the DNA sequence Analysis Program (DSAP). Click on the link below and register using your Pingry email. You will need to wait for approval which should take a few hours.
