COMPLETE YOUR CLONES!

Wednesday December 1

Stanley Miller

Hypothesis

 Prebiotic conditions for life

Origins of eukaryotes.

Assignment:

Evolution cartoon Project

www.pixton.com

Working in groups of three to four students, you will be required to make a cartoon related to the topic of evolution using the software at the following link: www.Pixton.com.   You will be required to illustrate the following 3 scenarios or ideas in your comic strip.

The Pingry Robotics Team has built a time machine and is planning to send several Biology II students back in time.  The mission is to provide insight in the biology occurring at various time points visited on the prehistoric earth:

A.      Your first stop is 4 billion years ago where you collect primordial soup containing the precursors to life.  What are the conditions like? You observe a polymer in this soup that can copy itself. Identify this molecule.

B.      Your next stop is 3 billion years ago where you find organisms that produce glucose from CO2 using “cyclic photophosphorylation”.  An eager colleague runs through the airlock to collect samples but quickly dies and turns blue. Explain why this man suffocated in the presence of photosynthetic organisms.

C. Your next stop is 1 billion years ago where you find organisms similar to today’s plants that produce glucose from CO2 and release O2 but these organisms also obtain energy from the glucose they synthesize.  These aerobic organisms generate 18 times more energy from glucose as compared to the organisms from part B. How is the extra energy generated?

Find and choose a genetic disorder to research

Genetics Project:

A Pamphlet on a particular inherited genetic disorder. You will be responsible for creating a professional pamplet on your given disease.  You will need to create your pamphlet for the parent who is facing a newly diagnosed child. You will need the background of the disease, its inheritance, and its mechanism of action, you should include symptoms, treatments and how to manage the disease. You should include at least three support organizations that are helpful for this parent.  Diagrams and images should be present to balance text, though you need to avoid large blank areas.

Analyse results of your gel. Remember the PCR primers add about 200 nucleotides to the length of your cDNA insert.. To get the final size of the insert you need to substract off 200 bases from your PCR fragment length.

You must put the slide in a ppt and correctly annotate your insert size and the ladder. See the ladder annotation slide link abovel
